5th Ward Block Captains

Fifth Ward Block Captains is a group of people who remind us of the importance of community leadership and that social change begins at home. They are a team of community environmental and community health advocates whose mission is to bring awareness and action to the community.

Guided by the communities they serve, they bring support and technology-enabled care to help residents get and remain healthy.  Block Captains are building the tools and designing an approach to enable information and resources to reach the communities who can benefit most.

Their core values embody the essence of what makes the Fifth Ward Block Captains a unique team today, and what they look for, nurture, and sustain as a team. They are bold builders, believing that the greatest challenges in environmental justice can be solved when we harness the power of community and technology.

They are humble learners, seeking feedback and perspectives different from their own, and welcome challenges to their conclusions. They actively seek data (Data-to-Action (D2A)) to inform decisions and to assess our own performance. They act with focused urgency, their commitment to their mission drives them to tirelessly advocate for and pursue results. The following skills are highly valued:

Community outreach and engagement: A strong communicator who’s ready to get the voice out there and help connect patients and services.

Advocacy skills: Skilled in connecting clients with the care they need and raise awareness of their risks and vulnerabilities.

Cultural competence: We understand that not everyone will feel comfortable working with the Black, LGBTQIA2S+ and Latinx communities. We’re looking for someone will be culturally respectful and willing to learn about their fears and needs as well as their risk factors.

They bring their passion, creativity, energy, and curiosity to the community  through the Coalition of Community Organizations.
